Small-scale farmers in rural areas in South Africa struggle to survive. NUHORUS (Niche-Unity Hands On Rural Unification Support) aims to promote sustainable resource use by farmers in the Western Cape, by encouraging sustainable agro-ecological farming practices, farm infrastructure support and education/knowledge sharing. This should increase the resilience and adaptation of farming communities in a context of increasing climatic and resource stress. Skills acquired by the farmers who are helped will be transferred to other members of the community through mentorship programmes.
NUHORUS helps farmers such as the two shown here with advice and small-scale funding, for example with respect to water storage, seed, fencing, or the best use of resources/choice of livestock.
